Hamming it up

Johnny Shepherd, right, president of the Amateur
Radio Club, fires up his equipment Saturday at the Ute Mountain Rest
Area for the annual Ham Radio Field Day. Next to Shepherd is Zac Wyman,
15, who is the youngest member of the club with a license and is
beginning his first field day.
Field Day Report
We had a great time and historically a very successful FD here at the Cortez
Radio Club with about 25+ participants between the two days. Our youngest ham
was 15 (Zac) and our oldest was 87 (Ros) who's birthday was Sunday. We had six
radios running with 5 long wire antenna's (Tom and Zac and Harold put the long
wires up and it was a marvel watching how proficient they were in doing it) and
two MP-1 portable commercial antenna's and we all worked SSB and CW on 10M, 15M,
40M, 20M and 75M on battery operation only. We ran from 5 watts to 100 watts and
everything went smoothly with 4 hams from out of state visiting. There was a
total of 97 contacts between SSB and CW. Cap really racked up the CW contacts
and Zac made about 35 SSB contacts by himself! Joe (our Vice President) was our
hardest working member as he hauled stuff in his truck back and forth and kept
us all fat and happy with his cooking. I really think that Joe was the backbone
of our success this year...THANK YOU JOE! Also I watched a lot of mentoring
going on amongst each other during the two days and that truly is a picture
postcard moment as that what we ham's do - help one another!
There was a picture of Zac and I in the Cortez Journal today (Tuesday on page
two - also see above on the web page ) so grab a paper and take a look! Overall
it was a great weekend and everyone completely enjoyed it. As club President I
was very honored to have a great two days of fellowship with each of you and am
very proud of the great group of people who support the club. By now you all
should have received the FD pictures I sent out. I hope it did not overwhelm
your email box as I tried to reduce the size of the pictures so they would
arrive quickly and download easily. For those with dial up accounts I apologize!
For those in attendance at the field day event but are not officially club
members let me remind you that you do not have to be a ham to be a club member
and you have a standing invite to participate in our events and to attend club
meetings.
